It’s true: everyone loves a beautiful flower crown. On 3rd-4th May we were in full flower crown mode at the invitation of Garden Day, running a busy flower crown station at Toby’s Garden Festival at Devon’s beautiful Powderham Castle.
Created by the Candide gardening app, the Garden Day movement is encouraging us gardeners to down tools on Sunday 12th May, pop on a flower crown and celebrate our gardens with neighbours, family and friends. What a lovely idea! It’s all about valuing gardens for mental wellbeing and building community – and that’s something that’s right up our Academy street.
Our team of two tutors and nine volunteers had met for a practice run at our Dunchideock studio the day before, prepping thousands of flowers together and designing our own flower crowns. By the time we arrived on site, we were flower-crown ready!

We are always looking for real-time, practical floristry experiences for our students, and the Garden Day pop-up was an excellent, fun way of engaging with the public through flowers.

We’ve also become real devotees of the Candide gardening app, and have no hesitation in strongly recommending it to our students. It is packed with valuable plant information, interesting stories and garden tours as well as machine-learning software for plant identification. And, amazingly, it’s free to download from Google Play or the App Store.
If you fancy hosting a little get-together this Sunday for Garden Day, you will find a toolkit at  www.gardenday.co.uk/toolkit packed with celebration ideas, Garden Day images and videos. There’s also a social media toolkit to help you join the conversation using the hashtag #GardenDayUK and tagging @GardenDayUK.
And as florists, we can’t help but get creative, so Garden Day is an excellent excuse to showcase our flower crown making expertise. Why not design a flower crown and share a photo from your Garden Day celebration tagging @GardenDayUK and #GardenDayUK? Who knows, you may win one of 10 National Garden Gift vouchers each worth £200? Be in it to win it!
TEASER: Garden Day has even inspired us to invent a new technique in floral crown design. We shall be revealing more in a special Academy video soon. Watch this space.
