Lots of news to share with you….
Firstly a massive welcome to all new students to the Academy of Floral Art this term, with the first newsletter of the year, a little later than usual, but what a year we have in store for you. You will see below lists of events and trips, the most fantastic new courses on offer and very exciting new bespoke workshops to inspire you on your floral journey.
Exam Results 2016
We are hugely proud of the students who took part in the exams in January and February which saw 100% pass mark for all the Academy of Floral Art students who took Academy Level 3 and City & Guilds Level 4 and 5. When the dust has settled we are here to discuss your next steps.
Heart of Design course 16-17 April
This workshop is exclusive to the Academy and takes you through a comprehensive understanding of the Principals & Elements of Design, the keys to helping you explore your individual design style. We are the only school to teach Form Linear in such depth. You will need this one under your belt if you plan to take the Academy’s Level 2 or 3 exams. To book your place click here.
RHS Malvern Spring Festival 5-8 May
Wonderful opportunity to attend this amazing RHS flower show before Chelsea! The Academy of Floral Art are honouring the Queen’s 90th Birthday with a catwalk show of Royal wedding bouquets at this event on Thursday 5th May, and the RHS has very kindly offered some complimentary tickets for the Press day (5th) and we are taking a coach up for the day. The coach (£30 per person) leaves Newton Abbot train station at 5.30am and Exeter motorway services at 6am and Bristol Country Baskets at 7am. Leaving Malvern at 3.30pm. Visit grower BJ Richards 18 May
Get to know our local wholesaler and grower: Paul and Darren of BJ Richards are opening up their poly tunnels for our students to visit. This is an excellent opportunity to ask all your questions about availability and ordering both British and overseas plant material. Meeting at BJ Nurseries 7pm. Please make your own way there. RHS Chelsea Flower Show 24-28 May
This extraordinary prestigious event will soon be upon us and we are thrilled to announce that three students past and present and our very own Tina Parkes will be taking part this year and we cannot wait to see how they will interpret the very exciting brief: To create a Brazilian Carnival Headdress. And we wish them all, every success in this feat of creative ingenuity.
World Skills is a global event and will give candidates an opportunity to be recognised both home and abroad and is not for the faint hearted. This year, Charlotte Dawe of Flower Scene in Launceston and Rosy Elesmore of Odds & Buds in Tavistock have entered this very exciting competition and we look forward to promoting their journey every step of the way. British Flower Week 13-19 June
We are delighted to be taking part in the New Covent Garden British Flower week 2016.
Join us on Friday 17th June 10am – 12pm at our studio in Dunchideock, Devon, to have a relaxing and informative workshop on arranging flowers in a vase.
We invite you to bring a couple of vases from home and we will show you how to fill them with flowers to create a stunning display, the 2 hour workshop will cover conditioning your flowers and foliage, spiralling stems and placement for focals. All flowers and foliage are included and are sourced from our local British grower. Click here to book.
Exeter Museum Workshop
This summer the RAMM (Exeter Museum) has a focus on Botanical Art with drawings commissioned from Indian artists by the East India Company dating to the early 19th century, incorporating the International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) exhibition competition.
We are delighted to have been asked to run a 2 hour workshop on Friday 5th August. So why not book a place with the museum and come and join the Academy of Floral Art for an enjoyable creative workshop in floral design. In this tailored made workshop held at the Museum, you will learn how to create a frame to support flowers that gives you a canvas to arrange your botanical materials, looking at how textures and groups can enhance an arrangements. No experience needed. All the flowers and foliages will be provided and tuition will be given by Julie Collins, British Floristry Master. To book contact the Museum.
Trip to Holland Thursday 3rd November £350.00
Wow we have a lovely trip planned for the Autumn and it is important to note that the more of you wishing to come the better the price will be and so we encourage you to get a booking form from us and get your deposit in. Please see the details below:

- Depart midday Thursday 3rd November Bristol Airport
- 2pm Amsterdam, shops, floating flower market
- 10pm pick up and back to hotel
- Friday leave hotel at 6.30am to guided tour of dutch auctions,
- 9am short walk to sundries wholesaler
- 11am short transfer to grower to have a tour.
- 1pm either lunch by coast or Hortiflor trade show (to be confirmed)
- 7pm flight to Bristol
Cost £350.00 includes flight, hotel, Dutch transfers (may be cheaper if more come or more expensive if you leave it to later in the year, as flights may go up). If interested a deposit for £150.00 which will secure the flight cost, payable to Floral Tours, I will email you a booking form on request.

We continue to prepare for our trip to California and the AIFD Symposium and the PFDE exam. Well done to all the Academy candidates for passing, (with top marks), the first stage of the exam with the on-line theory test. The planning is in full swing now and we look forward to sharing with you this event as it unfolds.
